Inspired by famed aircraft designer Jack Northrop, the man behind the original flying wing
of the 1950's and the world class racing planes the Alpha and the Gamma, this lighting piece
was probably my favorite project from KSU. I designed it to reflect the construction of
formers and spars that make real aircraft wings stable. The overall shape of the
piece comes from the geometric pattern that soundwaves form as an aircraft approaches and then
breaks the speed of sound. On a more literal level, the use of wood and metal reflect
the early days of aircraft construction. There is no standard switch to control the light
but rather a touch sensor that is activated by touching the metal. This keeps the design
clean and simple just like the aircraft that Jack Northrop was famous for.
